Excerpt from the article: “A Hole in Hell or a Transfer to Another Dimension?” – Aleš Česal, Milan Doležal, Fantastic Facts 9/97
It is said that Houska Castle should be older than Bezděz Castle, which is one of our oldest surviving castles.
The first question that arises is why Houska Castle was built at all. According to the authors of the article, Houska stands in a place that has no strategic significance. It is not close to any land trail, it was not a royal castle, it did not even serve as a border castle, it was built in a completely desolate landscape with no available water source. There is no reason why this castle should have been built.
It is also very interesting architecturally. According to the editors, the entire defensive system is aimed against an “internal enemy”. Perhaps it was guarded by “something” that was not allowed to get out.
According to legend, the castle was built on a rock with a passage leading to hell. Hell can mean pretty much anything. It is over this chasm that the castle chapel is supposed to stand.
It is also said that there are many underground passages and spaces in the castle where “certain things” and skeletons of “non-humans” are supposed to be buried. The place where one could enter these passages was supposed to be marked above the now defunct castle gate.
It is possible that even before Houska Castle was built, this place was so special that it attracted the attention of the ruling class of the time. Perhaps there was or is a passage to another world whose inhabitants may have been so different from us that they fulfilled the idea of the inhabitants of hell. So the authors ask: “What was the danger that seemed to threaten the very foundations of the feudal state, if such a castle complex was built to counteract that very danger?”
A figure in a monk’s hood
According to another legend, a figure wearing a black monk’s hood, with no face, appears in and around Houska and watches those who dare to visit Houska at night or even spend the night.
Come and make up your own mind about the mysteries that surround our castle.
